What is the purpose of a navigation system?
A navigation system is part of the user interface and allows the user to access the different areas of the website more easily.
Why are both text and images important on a website?
If users struggle to read or speak a different language, images can convey what the text was about.
What are two different methods of navigation?
Some users like to use menus, whereas other users prefer big buttons on the main page.
What is ethics?
Ethics is linked to behaviour and morals, and knowing the difference between right and wrong.
Why is ethics important when using the internet?
It is difficult to track all that is happening on the internet and although there are general rules to follow, it is difficult to police. Knowing how to behave online, netiquette, enables most users to behave ethically.
What are the current ethical issues linked to the internet?
Are games bad for teenagers? Is social media bad for teenagers’ health? Should DNA for all be kept in a centralised database? Should employees be answering emails at home, e.g. at the weekend?
What does ‘legal’ mean?
Legal links to laws set by the government. Businesses have a duty to follow this legislation in order to protect the citizens of the country to which the law relates.
What are the key laws linked to computing?
The Computer Misuse Act, the Data Protection Act and the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act.
What are the consequences of not following the law?
Fines, business closure, legal fees, imprisonment.
What does ‘cultural’ mean?
Relating to the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a society.
What is the ‘digital divide’?
The digital divide is the division that exists between those people who can use technology and are comfortable doing so, and those who are not. This division also extends to those people who can afford such technology, and those that cannot.
What does ‘environmental’ mean?
Relating to the natural world and the impact of human activity on its condition.
How do resources used with digital technology impact the environment?
Resources are needed in order for computers to be produced, distributed and used. Metals and plastics are used to manufacture components, while energy is expended in distributing equipment and in using it.
