8.3 Computer Networks Flashcards
What is the purpose of a navigation system?
A navigation system is part of the user interface and allows the user to access the different areas of the website more easily.
Why are both text and images important on a website?
If users struggle to read or speak a different language, images can convey what the text was about.
What are two different methods of navigation?
Some users like to use menus, whereas other users prefer big buttons on the main page.
What is a local area network (LAN)?
A local area network is located on one site, e.g. a small geographical area. Cardinal Wiseman is an example of a LAN. Clients (computers) and peripheral devices (printer) are connected via ethernet cables to a switch, which in turn connects them to a central server.
What is a Wide Area Network?
A wide area network is located on more than one site, where the LANs on each site are connected together via the internet. The router connects the network to the internet via a wireless access point.
Where is a Personal Area Network (PAN) most commonly used?
A PAN is commonly used at home to connect the different devices to the internet using wi-fi.
Where is an ad hoc network most commonly used?
An ad hoc network is a temporary network, commonly used in cafes, public transport etc where ‘open wi-fi’ or ‘free wi-fi’ is advertised.
What do both the PAN and the ad hoc network have in common?
They both require the internet.
What is the cloud?
The cloud is another name for the internet - an interconnected network where websites are hosted.
What is a cloud service provider?
The cloud service provider hosts the web server where files are stored. The CSP is responsible for the maintenance and security of the web server.
What is cloud storage?
Cloud storage is where files are stored on a web-based server so that they can be easily accessed provided there is internet access.
