7.4 Computer Systems Flashcards
What is the purpose of a navigation system?
A navigation system is part of the user interface and allows the user to access the different areas of the website more easily.
Why are both text and images important on a website?
If users struggle to read or speak a different language, images can convey what the text was about.
What are two different methods of navigation?
Some users like to use menus, whereas other users prefer big buttons on the main page.
What does CPU mean?
Central Processing Unit.
What is the purpose of the CPU?
The CPU is the brain of the computer, where the processing happens.
What is the purpose of the FDE?
The FDE is the fetch-decode-execute cycle performed by the CPU.
The instruction is fetched, decoded (translated) and then executed (the result of the processing is given).
What is hardware?
Hardware is tangible and can be both seen and touched.
What hardware input devices are commonly used?
The input devices include: mouse, keyboard, microphone, camera.
What hardware processing components are commonly used?
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the hardware that carries out the processing of instructions.
What hardware output devices are commonly used?
The output devices include: monitor, printer, speakers and projectors.
Describe system software.
Systems software helps run and maintain the operating of the system e.g. operating systems such as Windows and utility programs e.g. antivirus software.
State 2 features of an operating system.
Security - usernames and passwords.
File Management - saving and storing files.
Describe applications software.
Apps are used to carry out a task on the computer e.g. writing a document on Google Docs.
What is meant by the term volatile?
Volatile means that the computer forgets once the computer is turned off.
Why is secondary storage important?
It is non-volatile and saves data that is needed in the future.
