Q

Why is sketching considered a powerful tool in design?

A

Sketching is a powerful tool in design because it enables us to convey our design ideas to others quickly and concisely.

Q

What are orthographic sketches?

A

Orthographic sketches lay out the front, right and top views of a part.

Q

Describe the process of generating axonometric sketches.

A

The steps for generating axonometric sketches proceed as:

  1. Start with an axis.
    • typically a vertical line with two lines 30° from the horizontal. This axis forms the corner of the part.
  2. The object is then blocked in using light lines, with the overall size first.
  3. Then vertical lines are darkened, followed by other lines.
    • All lines in these sketches are either vertical or parallel to one of the two 30° lines.
  4. Details of the part are added last.

6
Q

Describe oblique sketches.

A

Oblique sketches are probably the most common type of quick sketch.

Oblique sketch procedure:

  1. The front view is blocked in roughly first.
  2. Depth lines are then added.
  3. Details such as rounded edges are added last.

Q

Describe perspective sketches.

A

The procedure for perspective sketches proceeds as follows:

  1. The front view is blocked in first.
  2. Then a vanishing point is chosen
  3. Projection lines are drawn from the points on the object to the vanishing point.
  4. The depth of the part is then blocked in using the projection lines.

Q

How is the procedure for oblique sketches similar to that of perspective sketches?

A

Perspective sketches are similar to the procedure for oblique sketches in that the front view is blocked in first.

Q

What do sketches serve as?

A

Sketches serve as informational starting points for other design activities (e.g. building physical models and prototypes).

Q

In what two ways can sketches be enhanced?

A

Sketches can also be enhanced if we:

  • pay attention to their proportions
  • annotate them

14
Q

How is proportion control useful in sketching?

A

Proportion control is extremely useful to show the relative sizes of parts, components, or features in a sketch.

Q

How is annotation useful in sketching?

A

Clear, easily read notes on sketches are tremendously useful in conveying the meaning behind the sketched ideas.

16
Q

What is a practical/useful method for annotation?

A

It is generally useful to follow the familiar architectural style of using evenly spaced block letters in annotation as they are generally much clearer than cursive scribbles.

17
Q

Note an example of additional sketches. Are they annotated?

A

These sketches are annotated.

18
Q

What types of sketches are pictured below?

A

These are orthographic sketches.
