Culture
The ideas, customs and traditions in a country
Exploitation
To take advantage of somebody or mistreat them
Globalisation
The increasing connections between countries all over the world through trade, travel and communications
Interconnected
Where places are connected and linked together (e.g. through globalisation)
Manufacturing
A company that makes something (e.g clothes, technology)
Newly Emerging Economy (NEE)
A company that is starting to grow its economy and get richer
Trade
Buying or selling goods
Transnational Corporation (TNC)
A business or company that is in two or more countries
Example of exploitation:
Being paid less money than should be received
Types of globalisation
Cultural, economic, political
Example of a NEE
Nigeria
Example of a TNC
Amazon
Give an example of a culture global connection and how does it connect us?
1974: McDonalds comes to the UK
-another country’s culture is being brough to the UK
-exposes people here to other food and new people
Give and example of a technology global connection and how it connects us
1989: The Internet was developed
-allows us to communicate and socialise with others
-learn about current events in other countries
-discover new people
A: What is the most important and least important type of global connection - why?
MI: technology
-quick, efficient and cheaper than transport
-stay connecting even in spite of the circumstance
-it has helped to prospect the other types of globalisation
LI: transport
-advancing technology allows us to communicate to people in other countries
-cheaper to use tehnology, transport is expensive
C: Why has Asia (the Asian Tigers) become more globalised?
Neighbours
-being close to countries that would buy their products
Location
-being close to a coast means easy acess to ships to transport goods, which is cheapest
What were the original Tiger economies?
Hong Kong
Singapore
South Korea
Taiwan
NEEs can be found in asia.
What are NEEs?
Countries that have developed very large manufacturing industries quickly, the countries in Eastern Asia have seen the largest growth.
C: Explain the human features of China
Population
-amount of people per km squared
-high population density in the east due to more opportunities and acess to facilities
Average income
-higher in the east than west because more resources, meaning higher profit
I: Contrast different regions in China
Regions along the east coast of China are much more developed than those on the west side.
C: Explain the physical features of China
Rivers
-majority found in the east
-more people live there for easier access to water
Relief (height of land)
-low relief along the east
-high relief along the west
-more people live there as building is easier due to flat land
C: Why has China’s economy grew so rapidly
Large workforce
-people moving from rural areas to urban areas
-one child policy makes women more likely to work
Geographical location
-access to coal, oil, and natural gas
-surrounded with strong countries who they can trade with
I: Contrast the effect of it’s economic growth on different regions (Beijing and Shenzhen)
Beijing
-residents suffer from shorter lifespans than the rest of China, due to high pollution levels, because of the vast economic boom
Shenzhen
-became a special economic sone, where taxes, land rents are low and work wages are very low.
Impacts of China’s economy on China
-Shenzhen depends on migrant workers from surrounding rural areas
-Beijing’s residents have shorter lifespans due to pollution levels
-migrant workers are poorly paid
Impacts of China’s economy on other countries
-Shenzhen’s high tech research attracts highly skilled workers globally
-16 of China’s cities are responsible for having the worst air pollution worldwide
-+40% of Chinese manufactured goods are sold overseas
C: Explain the characteristics of a TNC
-companies which operate in over two or more countries
-their headquarters tend to be in a developed country
-they outsource their manufacturing to devoloping countries
Advantages of a TNC
HIC
-offer wide range of products at a low price for people in developed countries
LIC
-money people earn goes to the local economy, improving the area - multiplier effect
Disadvantages of a TNC
HIC
-can move profits around so they avoid paying tax, illegal (breaking the law)
LIC
-few environmental laws, meaning higher levels of pollution and more industrial accidents
Evaluate whether TNC’s are positive or negative
Negative
-fratenising our future
-increased CO2 emissions from shipping, global warming
although it gives people a job there is no job security, no contract
-isn’t reliable
Positive
-improves country’s standard of living, otherwise that country would be left without any beneficial help
Positive effect of TNC workers paying tax
tax –> funding building schools –> children being educated –> good job + further emploment –> improves country’s standard of living
