Aid
Money, goods and services given by the government of one country or organisation to help another country.
Brandt line
An imaginary line to show the divide between the ‘rich’ North and ‘poor’ South based on GDP per capita.
Development
Economic and social progress that leads to an improvement in the quality of life for an increasing proportion of the population.
Development indicator
A measure of quality of life in a country.
Famine
Extreme scarcity of food.
GDP
Gross Domestic Product is the total income of a country in one year and is divided by the population of that country to give ‘GDP per capita (person)’
Infant mortality
The number of deaths of children under the age of one
Informal economy
A job (e.g. car washer, shoe shiner) which pays very little, has no contract and is set up by an individual. These workers pay no tax.
Life expectancy
The average number of years that a person may expect to live.
