The USS Maine (a US Navy ship) was exploded, supposedly by Spanish fleets, leading to the Spanish-American War
Roosevelt Corollary
Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine which stated that America could intervene in internal affairs in Latin America / the rest of the Western Hemisphere if the need arose
Gentlemen’s Agreement
Informal treaty in which Roosevelt would stop forcing Japanese students in America to go to segregated schools in exchange for Japan limitingJapanese immigration to the US
Dollar Diplomacy
President Taft’s foreign policy, which involved US businesses controlling industries (like railroads) in other countries in order for the US to maintain global power
Industrial Workers of the World
Labor union that organized members by industry rather than craft or accepting all laborers in the same union
Panama Canal
The US helped the people of Panama rebel against Colombia in exchange for controlling the Panama Canal (canal finished in 1914)
Referendum
When a bill is being considered, the government can choose to have a referendum, in which the people decide on it (popular vote) rather than the Senate / House
NAWSA
Advocated for female voting rights on a state-by-state basis
Congressional Union for Women’s Suffrage
Association who, unlike NAWSA, wanted women’s suffrage granted through a national Constitutional amendment
16th amendment
Created an income tax for wealthy people
17th amendment
People have the right to directly elect Senators
Payne-Aldrich Tariff
Act that raised tariffs and led to a split in the Republican Party because some saw Taft as a traitor, as he initially promised to not raise tariffs
“New Nationalism”
Roosevelt’s plan that included women’s suffrage, higher levels of government regulation of business, and an end to child labor (more progressive-minded reforms)
