What is a magneto caloric material ?
A material that shows Magneto Caloric Effect
What is Magneto Caloric Effect ?
It is a phenomenon where the application and removal of a magnetic field cause certain materials to get warmer and cooler respectively
What temp does it happen ?
Near to Curie temperature (500 degrees)
Why exactly near Curie temperature ?
At this temperature , the application of the field makes the material to warm up and removal cools it down
Why is it news ?
Indian scientists have developed a rare earth based magneto caloric material that can be used for Cancer treatment
What treatment is used for Cancer usually ?
Hyperthermia or Chemotherapy
Issues with chemotherapy or Hyper thermia ?
Hyper- High , thermia- Heat. So, in this the body temp is made very high during treatment to kill the cancer cells which sometimes breaks the inbuilt system of cooling the body . This has several sideffects like BP, hairloss etc
Does Magneto caloric effect resolve this ?
Yes. In this, magnetic nanoparticles are subjected to alternating magnetic fields which produce heat due to magnetic relaxation losses. the ideal temp to kill cancer cells which is 40-45 degrees is thus maintained. Then the field is removed
