9. Inhibitory drugs of CNS: Tranquilizer sedatives Flashcards
1
Q
Neuroleptics
A
Tranquilizer sedatives
- Depresses nerve function
2
Q
General effects of tranquilisers
A
- ↓Motor activity & aggression
- ↓ Response to stimuli & fear
- NO analgesic activity but potentiate the activity of analgesics
- ↑ Dose lengthens the duration of sedation
3
Q
Indications of tranquilisers
A
- Sedation (anti-dopamine)
- Antiemetic (anti-dopamine)
- Preanesthesia, neuroleptanalgesia in combinations
- Allergy (anti-histamine)
4
Q
Side effects of tranquilisers
A
- Hypotension (anti-α1) → Animal collapse if dehydrated
- Tissue irritation
- Epileptic seizures (anti-dopamine)
- ↓ Thermoregulation (anti-serotonin)
- Exacerbation of pseudopregnancy symptoms (anti-dopamine; ↑PRL secretion)
- Slow metabolism & excretion
5
Q
List the phenothiazines
A
- Chloropromazine
- Propionyl-promazine
- Acepromazine
All have similar efficacy but differing potency
6
Q
Phenothiazines: Effect
A
- Calming sedation → aggressive animals
- Muscle relaxation
- Premedication
- Slow onset, pure oral absorption
- Bulldogs/boxers → Sensitive
- IV/IM/PO
7
Q
Chlorpromazine
A
Paradox reaction in Eq. (anti-α1)
- Frequent side-effects
8
Q
Propionyl-promazine
A
Fewer side effects than chlorpromazine
9
Q
List the butyrophenones
A
- Azaperone
- Droperidol
10
Q
Butyrophenones: Effects
A
- More potent than phenothiazines
- Slight analgesic activity
- Excellent for neuroleptanalgesia
11
Q
Azaperone
A
Sedation for pigs reducing stress (IM)
12
Q
Droperidol
A
Neuroleptanalgesia
