9 - Control of Infestation Flashcards

1
Q

What 5 records should be kept post any scheduled cleaning

A

Sighting and treatment of infestation
Physical conditions where infestation occurs
Housekeeping ‘failures’ in any areas of the silos, mill and warehouses
Deficiencies in proofing against pests

Q

What are 3 limitations of contact insecticides

A

Thermal fogging, smoke generators and mist and aerosol spraying will kill moth adults which are exposed to the airborne insecticide particles/droplets, but have little effect on moth populations unless treatment is carried out very frequently, as the insecticidal deposit will only last a short time
Many insect pests breed and lay their eggs deep in the flour, therefore the larvae and pupa are not exposed to the airborne droplets or those that land on the horizontal surfaces
High standards of hygiene are necessary if surface insecticidal treatments are to be of any value in controlling crawling insects

Q

Identify and briefly describe 7 critical steps of an IPM

A

Inspection - schedule regular inspections of where pests are most likely to appear
Preventative action - Steps taken to address problems found in inspection
Identification - Different pests have different behaviours, if they are identified, they can be eliminated more efficiently
Analysis - The reason for a pests presence should be determined
Treatment selection - Try non-chemical first, if they fail then chemicals are permitted
Monitoring - Pest management is ongoing
Documentation - The IPM program needs to be well documented for auditing

Q

Describe the 7 ways to combat bird pests

A

Repellents - spikes along edges to prevent perching
Proofing - Plastic strip curtains allow humans but not birds
Netting - Prevents birds from nesting under warehouse canopies
Trapping - used for birds on silo roofs
Stupefying baits - usually contain a narcotic
Shooting - licensed method used by trained marksmen
Mist netting - used against sparrows inside buildings
