6 - Fork Lift Trucks Flashcards
What does the choice of truck depend on
Space available
Type of work
Capital cost
Running costs
Different trucks
Reach trucks
Counterbalance trucks
Hand pallet trucks
Electric pedestrian truck
Turret truck
Advantages of reach trucks
Can operate in narrower aisles than counter balance trucks
More storage space is available
Load is carried within wheel base, more stable
Operator sits at right angles to direction of travel, reducing driver fatigue when reversing
Disadvantages of reach trucks
High wear and tear
Small wheels make reach trucks unsuitable for use on uneven floors or wet and sloping ground
Battery operated so slower in operation than counter balance
Describe a coutner balance truck
Carry load in front axle
weight of load counterbalanced by weight of battery unit
extra weights added to rear of vehicle if necessary
driven by electricity, gas or diesel
Advantages of counter balance trucks
highly manouvrable, can cope with slopes
Can move heavy loads over long distances
Disadvantages of counterbalance trucks
Need relatively wide aisles to work in
Driver faces forward, increasing level of fatigue
Describe electric powered counterbalance truck
Can charge batteries at off peak times
low running costs
clean operation
need to be fully charged at start of work
Describe gas powered counterbalance trucks
More power and greater speed than electric
Can be used with pre-filled or re-fillable tanks
relatively expensive to operate
Adequate ventilation, regular carbon monoxide testing and effective vehicle maintenance are essential to avoid build up of exhaust fumes
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
Dull headache
weakness
dizziness
nausea or vomitting
shortness of breath
confusion
blurred vision
loss of consciousness
Description of diesel counterbalance trucks
Easy to fuel, powerful, fast, flxible
Exhaust fumes are dangerous in enclosed spaces and can taint flour
only used outdoors
Description of hand pallet truck
Cheapest and most basic
wheeled platform inserted into openings of pallet
platform raised hydraullically, lifting pallet from ground so load is concentrated on rollers
Advantages of hand pallet trucks
Compact design, can move pallets to areas that are usually inaccessible to powered FLTs
Easy to move
Cheapest form of FLT
Disadvantages of hand pallet trucks
Can only lift about 5cm
require great deal of physical effort - associated safety and health risks
slow stock movement
impractical where ground is uneven or sloping
Description of electric pedestrian truck
Common, reasonably cheap, same advatnages as hand pallet truck
no physical effort to move, can travel over slight slopes
Describe turret trucks
AKA very narrow aisle trucks
highly specialised
used in high density warehousing
require special racking
not suitable for direct loading
If the aisles are narrow, what truck is more suitable
Reach truck
If space is not a main consideration, what truck is more suitable
Counterbalance truck
What truck is commonly used for load marshalling
Counterbalance truck
If goods to be marshalled are readily accessible, what truck is best
Pedestrian truck
What are the considerations for truck loading
Road surface
Speed of loading required
whether loading is done from a raised platform or ground level
If loading is from ground on an even surface, what truck is used
Counterbalance or reach truck
If ground is uneven what truck can never be used
Reach truck - wheels to small
If loading from a raised platform, what truck can be used
Pedestrian truck
