5 - Palletisation Flashcards
Label the bag patterns on a pallet
How does manual palletisation work
Filled bags received on a conveyor and places in a set pattern on a pallet
Disadvantages of manual palletisation
High labour costs
Unstable pallets
Untidy and poorly presented pallets
Warehouse space can be lost as they cant be stacked more than 3 high
Potential MSDs as result of high task repetition
What does an automatic palletiser consist of
Input conveyor - carries bag from packing process
Bag flattener - shapes bag
Turning head - turns bag through 90 or 180’
Flat plate on rollers - bags are prepared in a programmable configuration after being turned
Lifting table - Places each layer on top of the previous
Application of polythene to the pallet
Ejection conveyor
Advantages of automatic palletiser
Uniform presentation - good stackability
Tider presentation than manual
Can handle large throughputs
Stacking patterns can be altered on programmable control
Controlled by 1 operative and fork lift truck driver, quick changes from one to another are possible
Reduced labour costs
Disadvantages of automatic palletisation
Significant initial capital outlay
Dependent on design, can occupy a large area
Efficiency depends on quality of the pallets
Requires maintenance
What materials are pallets usually made of
Wood or Plastic
What does the type of pallet depend on
Size of pallet required
Whether 2 way or 4 way truck entry is needed
Whether they should be reversible
Whether they should be close or open board
Weight of load to be carried
Material theyre to be made of
Method of mechanical handling
Method of stacking
Quantity required
Customer requirements
How does an inverter work
Using a fork truck, place the stack with the pallet on the bottom plate of the inverter, place a new pallet on top of stack
Clamp top plate down onto stack and turn 180 degrees
When the load has been inverted 180’, unclamp and lift out stack
Uses of an inverter
Turn stacks of bags to replace damaged bags in bottom or intermediate layers
Rapid replacement of damaged pallets
Fast and convenient exchange between unclean wooden pallets and clean plastic pallets
Compression and/or straightening of stacks
To place or remove slip sheets
Using plastic protection bags to completely cover both bottom and top of stack to make it water tight
Which stacking types are usually used on standard 1000mmx1200mm pallets
Chimney 4
3 and 2
Chimney 8
3 and 2 with spacing
What should be considered to prevent product damage on a pallet
All bags should be interlocked
Pallet slats should be in good condition
Slip sheets must be used between the pallet and the bottom layer
