Phase 1 of the atmosphere.
A
Volcanoes produced tonnes of CO2. So the atmosphere was just CO2 and some nitrogen and water vapour.

Phase 2
A
When the water vapour condensed it formed oceans. CO2 dissolved in the oceans. Algae and plants absorbed some of the CO2 for photosynthesis.

Phase 3
A
Algae also produced lots of oxygen. Then animals used this oxygen and nitrogen was not needed by organisms for respiration so became the majority in the atmosphere.

A gas that insulates the earth. Allowing earth to be warm.
