2 Bonding, Structure and Properties of matter Flashcards
Explain the bond
What is ionic bonding
Metal+Non metal it is the electrostatic attraction between a positive and negative ion. Forming a ionic lattice.
Explain the bond
What is a metallic bond
Metal+Metal. Giant metallic structure with delocalised electrons allowing for a charge to pass through
Explain it
What is a covalent bond
This is when two non metals share one or more electrons to gain a full outer shell. This allows for strong intermolecular forces
What are intermolecular forces
They determine the boiling point and melting point they are quite weak and increase due to the size of the molecule.
What happens to magnesium when it reacts with oxygen
Magnesium forms a 2+ ion whilst oxygen forms a 2- ion. Magnesium needs to lose 2 electrons to gain that positive charge whilst oxygen needs to gain 2 electrons to have a negative 2- charge. When they are charged, they become electrostatically attracted to one another. The transfer of electrons allows them to fully bond. This electrostatic attraction is strong.
