4 Acids and bases Flashcards

1
Q

What is a base its groups and what ion does it have

Give examples of sub groups

A

Bases are split into insoluble bases like carbonates and oxides. Soluble bases are called alkalis and consist of hydroxides. These substances have a higher ph than 7 and the ion is OH-

Q

What is an acid and what ion does it contain

Give examples

A

A soluble substance in water that has a higher pH than 7. They are neutralised by bases and the ion is H+. Some acids are sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric.

Q

Why is hydrochloric acid stronger than ethanoic acid even though HCl is dilute

A

This is because the ions in HCl full ionise making it more reactive and able to corrode more. Whilst in ethanoic acid or vinegar the ions havent full ionised

Q

Step by step

Titration

A

Measure out 25cm cubed of HCl into a measuring cylinder then into a conical flask
3-5 drops of indicator
Fill biurette with 0.1 mol/dm cubed of NaOH to 0.00cm cubed
Read from bottom of meniscus
Open swith and swirl Hcl until permanent colour change

Q

Titration equation when the mean of titration is 23.13
and the NaOH concentration is 0.1

A

Moles of (NaOH) lXv=0.1x(23.13/1000)=2.313x10 -3
1:1 ratio
Concentration of
(HCL)=n/v=2.313x 10 -3/25/1000=0.09252
