1 Atoms:Mixtures Flashcards
What is a mixture
A group of two or more elements that are not chemically combined
What is a solvent
A subtance that dissolves multiple soluble subtances
What are soluble and insoluble substnaces
Soluble can disolve
Insoluble cannot
What are the ways to seperate mixtures
Paper chromotography
Filtration
Evaporation
Crystillation
Distillation
Fractional distilation
Get paper
Explain chromotography and go step by step
Used to seperate substances in a mixture
Draw line near bottom of filter paper Use pencil
Add a spot of ink on the line
Place the sheet into a beaker filled with a solvent like water depending on mixture used
Beaker should be place with 2 cm of solvet
The solvent seeps up the filter paper
When the solvent has nearly reached top of paper take it out
Leave it to dry and those are your results
Explain Filtration and the steps
Filtration seperates insoluble solids from liquids
Liquid is poured through the filter paper into a funnel.
The liquid that comes through is pure
Explain evaporation and the steps
Pour the solution into an evaporating basin
Slowly heat the basin
You will be left with crystals
Explain crystillisation and the step by step
Same as evaporation but when half of solvent is gone then take of the heat and leave to rest
Disti
