7 Organic 2 Flashcards
What are alchohols and how are they formed
Alcohols functional group is OH. They end in ol They are formed through fermentation. This is a slow process that requires low energy and yeast.
General formula for alcohols
CnH2n+1OH
Temperature for fermentation
37
What are carboxyllic acids and how are they formed.
There functional group is COOH with one double bond. Ending in anoic acid. They are weak as they dont fully ionise. They are formed when an alcohol is oxidised with a catalyst.
Uses of alcohols
Solvents/Fuels
What would you see with an alcohol and sodium
Bubbles or effevesence as hydrogen is being produced
What are esters and how are they formed
Esters have the functional group COO. They are formed from carboxyllic acids and alcohols with an acidic catlayst to form an ester and water. They end in anoate.
What is an ester link
The ester functional group that links the alcohol and acid together to form an acid
