8Ia - The particle model Flashcards
Describe the charachteristics of solids.
Keep their shape and volume, cannot flow and are difficult to compress.
Describe the charachteristics of liquids.
Keep their volume but not their shape, can flow, take the shape of the container and are difficult to compress.
Describe the charachteristics of gases.
Can change shape and volume, spread out in all directions and are easy to compress.
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from a high concentration to low concentration.
What is brownian motion?
Random movement displayed by small particles.
What is density?
The measurement of how tightly a material is packed together.
What is volume?
The space occupied within the boundaries of an object in three-dimensional space.
What is mass?
A quantity representing the amount of matter in a particle or object.
What happens to materials in cool and hot atmospheres?
Materials expand when heated and contract when cooled, because the particles in hotter materials move faster and so take up more space then in cool materials.
