What is the UN?
A international organisation, founded after the second world war with aims to maintain global peace
What are the roles of the UN?
- maintain international peace and security
- protect human rights
- uphold international law
- deliver humanitarian aid
- promote sustainable development
What are the different sanctions the UN can implement?
Arms embargo- ban weapons and military
Trade embargo- ban specific import items
Restrictions on loans- for development projects
Freezing assets- specific important peoples in that country
Travel restrictions- reduces tourism and business people
When have the UN been unsuccessful?
Iran
=> they attempted to build nuclear weapons so to reduce risk UN intervened
=> economic sanctions and trade embargo which due to being one of biggest exporters should’ve been impactful, only reduces 5% GDP
Bosnia
=> Ethnic cleansing occured in bosnia between serbs and muslims
=> lots of people died as UN peacekeepers were unsuccessful
When have the UN been successful?
Since ww2 there has been no wars to that scale so could argue that it has been successful slightly
Provides aid to a lot of people
Who are the security states in the UN?
UK, USA, USSR, China, France
How are the security states in the UN different?
They are able to veto decisions no matter what
E.g. Russia
- due to them being a security member it means they can veto decisions
- most un countries wanted to stop Russia invading Ukraine but didn’t happen because Russia said no using veto
