USSR communist:
- one party election
- standards of living low
- state owned industry
- controlled by government
USA capitalist:
- free democracy
- businesses privately owned
- free of control
- wealthy country but more in poverty
What does colonialism and neo-colonialism mean?
colonialism- direct control, forceful way to invade countries, military force
neo-colonialism- indirect control, economic control through aid told to spend is specific way, TNCs, terms of trade, global finance and debt, structural adjustment policies
What is a multi-power world and a example?
Power divided into 3 or more superpowers
E.g. British empire as France and Spain also had colonies
gained power- direct colonialism
maintained- control world trade, military
lost- gave independence
What is a unipolar world?
only one dominant power
E.g. USA after soviet union lost power
What is a bi-polar world and a example?
involves two opposing superpowers
E.g. USA and the soviet union
gained- development in the countries, industrialisation etc
maintained- military influence and political, NATO and Warsaw pact formed
lost- communist groups fell, Chernobyl, multi-party system in place
What was the Mackinder theory?
theory that whoever controlled the largest land mass (the pivot, the heartland, the world island) controlled the world
What is the pivot, heartland and the world island? (mackinder theory)
pivot- central Asia
heartland- eastern Europe to Russia
world island- Europe, Russia, Asia
