8.4 Volume and Surface Area Flashcards
Solid geometry
The study of 3D solid figures
Space figures
3D solid figures
Volume
A measure of capacity of a 3D figure (units^3)
Surface area
The sum of the areas of the surfaces of a 3D figure (area of outside surfaces)
Rectangular solid
V = lwh
SA = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh
Cube
V = s^3
SA = 6s^2
Cylinder
V = (pi)r^2h
SA = 2(pi)rh + 2(pi)r^2
Cone
V = 1/3(pi)r^2h
SA = (pi)r^2 + (pi)rSQR(r^2 + h^2)
Sphere
V = 4/3(pi)r^3
SA = 4(pi)r^2
Polyhedron
A closed surface formed by the union of polygonal regions
Face
Polygonal region
Edge
Line segment formed by the intersection of two faces
Vertex
The point at which two or more edges intersect
Relationship between vertex, face, and edge
Number of vertices - number of edges + number of faces = 2
Platonic solid (regular polyhedron)
A polyhedron whose faces are all regular polygons of the same size and shape
Prism
A special type of polyhedron whose bases are congruent polygons and whose sides are parallelograms
V = bh (b = area of base)
Lateral faces
Parallelogram regions of the prism
Right prism
If the lateral faces are rectangles
Pyramids
A type of polyhedron with only one base and triangular lateral faces
V = 1/3bh
