8.3 Diffraction Flashcards
diffraction
the bending or spreading out of light as it passes through a narrow opening or around an obstacle
single slit diffraction
When light passes through a narrow opening, the light waves seem to spread out (diffract)
(The opening must be the size of the wavelength or smaller to see true diffraction)
slit lens system
If a lens is placed between a narrow slit and a screen, a pattern is observed consisting of a bright central light fringe with alternating dark and bright fringes on each side
interference
when waves interact with each other, the displacements of the waves add together
double split experiment
showed that the diffracted rays of light emerging from 2 parallel slits can interfere with one another
diffraction gratings
A tool used to separate light of different wavelengths with high resolution
