What is functional organisation?
A type of organisational structure that uses the principle of specialisation within a an organisations existing structure.
What are the advantages of functional organisation?
No Structural change
Flexibility of staff
In depth expertise
Easy post-project transition
What are the disadvantages of functional organisation?
Lack of focus
Poor integration
Slow reponse
lack of ownership
What is Pure Project Organisation?
A type of organisational structure that uses a dedicated project team, typically using contractors.
What are the disadvantages of Pure Project Organisation?
lack of commitment at task level
Shortage of labour could occur
Project learning and improvement is difficult
What are the advantages of Pure Project Organisation?
Highly felxible workforce
Minimum payroll for permanent staff
Lower overheads fot managing projects
What is matrix management?
Balance of functional and pure project. Project team made from people from appropriate departments.
What are the three types of matrix management and what do they mean?
Lightweight - Functional manager has more power, responsibility lies across department (Functional bias)
Balanced - Evely split
Heavyweight - Project manager has more power, projects vital to organisation (Pure project bias)
