Thought is an extension of perception and memory

We form mental representations
Recall them using memory

What is thinking?
Thinking is manipulating mental representations (images or words) for a purpose
What kind of thinking occurs during communication?
Thinking that occurs during social engagement is usually in WORDS
Define Explicit cognition / explicit thinking
Explicit cognition involves CONSCIOUS MANIPULATION of mental representations.
Define Implicit cognition / thinking
Implicit cognition is thinking that is OUTSIDE of AWARENESS.
Define Heuristics?
Mental shortcuts for selecting amongst the alternatives WITHOUT carefully considering each one.
What does Heuristics allow people to do?
Heuristics allow people to make rapid, efficient but sometimes irrational judgements.
Define Theory of mind
Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others.
What is a developmental milestone for kids?
Kids are ethnocentric. When they mature, they’ll learn to recognise that they have their own thoughts, and others have theirs. The thoughts are completely different.
What are other forms of thinking?
Reasoning
Decision making
Problem solving
Define the Reasoning process
Reasoning is thinking in a logical sensible manner.
The process is people generating and evaluating arguments & beliefs.
Define the Decision making process
Decision making is da process which a dude weighs the Pro’s & Con’s of different alternatives in order to make a choice.
Define Problem solving
Problem solving is the mental act of transforming one situation into another to meet a goal.
How does Problem solving work?
Involves defining a problem.
Identifying, prioritising, and choosing alternative solutions, then implementing the solution.
