Q

What is the basic definition of Sensation?

A

The sensory organs collect information about the worldly environment, and transmit this info to the brain.

Q

In basic terms, what is Perception?

A

The process by which the brain selects, organizes & interprets sensation - Aka. the stuff that the brain has generated for you.

  • creating meaningful info out of whatever the sensory stuff is for Understanding sake.

Q

What exactly is sensory intake?

A

The world has a lot of physical activity going on, eg. waves, particles, noise. The sensory organs are sensitive & can detect this physical activity (5 senses) for the brain to process.

Q

What are the 5 senses?

A

The 5 senses are:
- Sight / Vision
- Hearing / Auditory - Air pressure change
- Smell / - Proximity
- Taste - Chemicals
-Touch

Q

Name the 3 principles of all Sensation & Perception

A
  1. There is no one-to-one correspondence between physical world to psychological
    reality / brain.
  2. sensation and perception are active/constructive, not passive
  3. Throughout evolution, sensory and perceptual processes have been shaped by adaptive pressures.

Q

True or false. Human sensory organs are perfect.

A

False. Some things cannot be sensed by human sensory organs, there are limitations as to what we can detect.

Also, our sensory organs tries to build its “best” construct of the outside world - won’t be an accurate depiction (not flawless and unquestionable)

Q

Where does the Neuron firing come into play in sensation?

A

The Sensory neurons (In sensory organs) are the starting neuron. Aka - They are the ones kicking off the neuron firing

The end result is action - behavior, depends on how you wanna respond to it.

Q

What is the limitation of Transduction?

A

Transduction is only calibrated to detect specific parts of this physical energy, based on environmental pressures.

Not every single thing, only selected things.

Q

Biologically speaking, what is the purpose of sensory ability?

A

From an evolutionary perspective, the primary purpose is for survival (to stay alive)

That is kinda why we aren’t concerned with the accuracy of our interpretations.

Q

In terms of sensation in vision, what is the brain science behind that?

A

The Photoreceptors on the retina converts light energy into neuron firing.

Light hits Retina (the Rod & Cone), voltage threshold is met - neuron fires

Q

Do Rod & Cones have limitations?

A

Yes they do. Rod & Cones only respond to a small fraction of the electromagnetic radiation present in the world.

17
Q

What is the end result of perception?

A

The end result is action - behaviour, depending on how you wanna respond to it.
