8. Kelly: Personal Construct Theory Flashcards
Main idea
People see the world through a lens of their own organized systems of construction, which they use to anticipate events. These are mental maps we have of reality
People are not passive, but have an active role
How are we like scientists
we conduct “experiments” to test our beliefs. If they work they strengthen beliefs, if they don’t, we change our views.
Bipolar categories to understand the world
Personal construct therapy:
When does psychopathology occur
When a disordered construct system does not accurately predict events or accommodate new data
Personal Construct Therapy:
The Kelly’s experience Cycle
- Anticipation
- Planning
- Event
- Result (reflection)
- Integration
Implicative dilemma
Arises when a desired change on one construct is associated with and undesired implication on another construct
