8-Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is purity
A substance which only contains one compound or element throughout
How can boiling and melting points show how pure a substance is
Pure substance boil at a specific temperature
Impurities Lowe the melting point and increase the melting range
What is a formulation
A mixture with a precise purpose that are made by following a formula
What’s a pigment
Gives the paint a colour
What’s a solvent
Something which makes dissolves others and makes something more runny
What’s a blinder
Forms a film that holds everything in place
What’s an additive
Something added to cause further changes
What’s the test for chlorine
Damp litmus paper turns white
What’s the test for oxygen
A glowing split will re light
What’s the test for carbon dioxide
Add limewater and it will go cloudy
What’s the test for hydrogen
Hold a burning splint and you will hear a pop noise
What is chromatography
A separation technique to separate substances in a mixture
How do you work out the Rf value
Distance travelled by the substance/distance travelled by the solvent
