7-Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is an hydrocarbon
Compound only containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only
What is an Alkane
Simplest form of an hydrocarbon
What’s the formula of Alkanes
C H
n 2n+2
First 4 alkanes
Methane
Ethane
Propane
Butane
Properties of a chain of hydrocarbons
Shorter the chain the runnier, volatile, more flammable
SHORTER CHAINS ARE MORE VALUABLE
Combustion equation
Hydrocarbon + oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + water
What is crude oil
A fossil formed through plant remains which were burried in mud and high temperature and pressure turns them into crude oil
What is fractional distillation
Separating mixtures which all have different boiling points
Why is crude oil important
Fuel for transport
Make products like polymers and lubricants
What is cracking
The splitting up of longer chain molecules
Why crack molecules
Shorter chain molecules are more desirable as they are used for fuels.
Longer chain molecules are less desirable as they are gloopy and aren’t useful
What’s the cracking process
1-heat up the molecules
2-vaporise then (turn into gas)
3-add a catalyst which splits the molecules apart
