Who is he ?
He was the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore and one of the most prominent artists of Bengal School of Art in India
Why is he in news ?
NGMA (National gallery of Modern Art) is planning to organise a Virtual Tour on account of his 150th birth anniversary
Contributions ?
1) 1st Major supporter of Swadeshi values in Indian Art
2) Famous paintings : Bharat Mata, Passing of ShahJahan, My Mother, FairyLand illustration, Last Journey
3) He first created the “Indian Society of Oriental Art” and later “Bengal School of Art”
4) He was also a proficient writer
5) Some of his books are – BudoAngla, Kheirputul, Rajkahani etc (child literature)
What was his thought on Indian Art ?
1) He believed that Indian Art and its forms gave importance to spirituality as opposed to West which stressed on Materialism
2) His idea on Mughal and Rajput painting eventually gave shape to Modern Indian painting
3) Most of his works are around Hindu philosophy
4) In his later works, he integrated Chinese and Japanese calligraphic traditions
