Where is it grown usually ?
In Kerala (Note : Wherever Kali comes in the end, think of Kerala bcoz Kathakali) – It is specifically cultivated in waterlogged districts like Ernakulam , Alapuzzha, Thrisur etc
Why is this rice famous ?
For its high saltwater resistance
It also has GI Tag
Why is it in news ?
Now WB is also planning to experiment with this rice variety
Additional details of Pokkali rice ?
1) It has a peculiar taste
2) High protein content
3) Higher value of antioxidants
4) Low carbohydrate content
Hence preferred for a low sugar diet
So now how many varieties of rice will WB be growing ?
Extra info !! They already grow 3 per year – Aus, Aman and Boro (names of the 3 rice varieties grown in diff cropping seasons of a year). With this Pokkali, it will be 4 !!
