8 Flashcards
Trophic Mutalism?
A mutualistic receives energy or nutrients from its partner.
Habitat Mutualism?
One partner provides the other with shelter (favourable habitat).
How do we define a community?
Groups of interacting species that occur together at the same place and time. Community definition can be altered by ecologists (e.g. kelp forest community, and community of fish species only)
Guild?
species that use the same recourse
Functional Group?
Species that function in similar ways (e.g. nitrogen-fixing plants)
Community structure?
Set of characteristics that shape communities (e.g. species diversity, species composition)
species diversity?
Combines two aspects of community: Species richness, species evenness
Species evenness?
Relative abundances compared with one another.
Rank abundance curve axis?
*X = abundance rank
*Y = Proportional Abundance
Tropical areas tend to have more ______ but each species tend to be relatively ______?
species, rare
