8 Flashcards
Types of ecology? (4•)
•Organismal, •population, •community, •ecosystem ecology.
Organismal Ecology? (2•)
•How individuals interact with their environment by •adaptations that allow an organism to live in a particular area.
Ecosystem ecology?
Movement of energy and nutrients through the environment.
Fundamental Niche?
A multidimensional space defined by an organism’s tolerance to environmental conditions and the required resources. Such conditions may possibly restrict the distribution of an organism.
History and disturbance? (•5)
•Speciation events, •history dispersal, •local extinction, •historical disturbance, •disturbance regime
Eutrophication?
Excessive richness of nutrients in a body of water that causes dense growth of plant life.
Net Primary Production (NNP)?
(Amount of carbon fixed by photosynthesis over a given time) - (amount oxidized during cellular respiration)
What does it mean if P < 0.05???
Statistical test revealing that the data is the same.
Realized niche?
A part of a niche inside a fundamental niche where there are optimal habitats surrounding unacceptable habitat.
Fundamental niche?
A region where the organism can survive.
Criteria for the fundamental niche?
When the carrying capacity is positive.
Criteria for realized niche?
When the species thrives and outcompetes the other.
Competitive exclusion?
It is not possible for species within the same niche to coexist.
What happens if niches overlap completely?
They will always compete and one species will eventually become extinct.
Determining patterns in data?
Trends, numerical values, statistical tests
