7th grade science 6 Flashcards
Host cell
A living cell that a virus enters to make copies of itself
Virus
A non-living particle that causes a disease; a strand of hereditary material surrounded by a protein coating
Enzymes
Protein that controls most chemical reactions in cells
Inorganic compound
Compound that is made from elements other than Carbon; compounds that make up most nonliving things
Mixture
A combination of substances in which individual substances keep their own properties
Organic compound
Compounds that have carbon and hydrogen atoms; compounds that make up all living things
Active transport
Takes place when energy is needed to move substances through a cell membrane; uses transport proteins
Diffusion
Random movement of molecules from an area where there are more of them into an area where there are fewer of them
Endocytosis
Process of taking substances into a cell by surrounding them with the cells membrane
Exocytosis
Process in which the contents of a vesicle are moved outside iCell
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through the cell membrane
Passive transport
Movement of substances through the cell membrane without using energy
Fermentation
Chemical reaction that releases energy stored in glucose molecules and produces carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and alcohol as waste
Metabolism
All chemical reactions that take place in an organism
Photosynthesis
Process that uses light energy, carbon dioxide, and water to produce the sugars and oxygen needed by all living things
