7.3.1/ Janae Flashcards
atmosphere
definition: the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Altitude
definition: the height of an object or point about sea level or ground level.
“flight data including airspeed and altitude”
Density
definition: the degree of compactness of a substance
Troposphere
definition : the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth’s surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere
Troposphere
definition: the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth’s surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere
Stratosphere
definition: the layer of the earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 32 miles (50 km) above the earth’s surface (the lower boundary of the mesosphere
Mesosphere
definition: the region of the earth’s atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, between about 30 and 50 miles (50 and 80 km) in altitude.
Thermosphere
definition: the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. An increase in temperature with height characterizes the thermosphere.
Exosphere
definition: the outermost region of a planet’s atmosphere.
Temperature
definition: the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch
Nitrogen
definition: the chemical element of atomic number 7, a colorless, odorless unreactive gas that forms about 78 percent of the earth’s atmosphere. Liquid nitrogen (made by distilling liquid air) boils at 77.4 kelvins (−195.8°C) and is used as a coolant.
Carbon Dioxide
definition: a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning carbon and organic compounds and by respiration. It is naturally present in air (about 0.03 percent) and is absorbed by plants in photosynthesis.
Oxygen
definition : a colorless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.
air pressure
definition: The air around you has weight, and it presses against everything it touches. That pressure is called atmospheric pressure, or air pressure. It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth. Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer.
concentration
definition: the action or power of focusing one’s attention or mental effort.
