7.3.1/Ariel Flashcards
Atmosphere
Defenition-the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Altitude
Defenition-the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Density
Defenition-the degree of compactness of a substance.
Troposphere
Defenition-the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth’s surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere.
Stratosphere
Defenition-the layer of the earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 32 miles (50 km) above the earth’s surface (the lower boundary of the mesosphere).
Mesosphere
Defenition-the region of the earth’s atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, between about 30 and 50 miles (50 and 80 km) in altitude.
Thermosphere
Defenition-the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height.
Thermosphere
Defenition-the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height.
Exosphere
Defenition-the outermost region of a planet’s atmosphere.
Temperature
Defenition-the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.
Nitrogen
Definition-the chemical element of atomic number 7, a colorless, odorless unreactive gas that forms about 78 percent of the earth’s atmosphere. Liquid nitrogen (made by distilling liquid air) boils at 77.4 kelvins (−195.8°C) and is used as a coolant.
Carbon dioxide
Defenition-a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning carbon and organic compounds and by respiration. It is naturally present in air (about 0.03 percent) and is absorbed by plants in photosynthesis.
Oxygen
Defenition-a colorless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.
Altitude
Defenition-the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Density
Defenition-the degree of compactness of a substance.
Air pressure
Defenition-the force exerted by air, whether compressed or unconfined, on any surface in contact with it.
Consentration
Defenition-the abundance of a constituent divided by the total volume of a mixture.
Condition
Defenition-the state of something with regard to its appearance, quality, or working order.
Constant
Defenition-occurring continuously over a period of time.
Continuous
Defenition-forming an unbroken whole; without interruption.
Composition
Defenition-the nature of something’s ingredients or constituents; the way in which a whole or mixture is made up.
Elevation
Defenition-the action or fact of elevating or being elevated.
Generate
Defenition-cause (something, especially an emotion or situation) to arise or come about.
Hazard
Defenition-a danger or risk.
Increase
Defenition-become or make greater in size, amount, intensity, or degree.
Influence
Defenition-the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
Inhabitable
Defenition-suitable to live in; habitable.
Instability
Defenition-lack of stability; the state of being unstable.
Layer
Defenition-a sheet, quantity, or thickness of material, typically one of several, covering a surface or body.
Moderate
Defenition-average in amount, intensity, quality, or degree.
Monitor
Defenition-an instrument or device used for observing, checking, or keeping a continuous record of a process or quantity.
Originate
Defenition-have a specified beginning.
Pollutant
Defenition-a substance that pollutes something, especially water or the atmosphere.
Property
Defenition-a thing or things belonging to someone; possessions collectively.
Radiation
Defenition-the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.
Region
Defenition-an area or division, especially part of a country or the world having definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries.
Relative
Defenition-considered in relation or in proportion to something else.
Solar
Defenition-relating to or determined by the sun.
Stable
Defenition-(of an object or structure) not likely to give way or overturn; firmly fixed.
Structure
Defenition-the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex.
Surface
Defenition-the outside part or uppermost layer of something (often used when describing its texture, form, or extent).
Uninhabitable
Defenition-(of a place) unsuitable for living in.
