7.3.1/Ariel Flashcards
Atmosphere
Defenition-the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Altitude
Defenition-the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Density
Defenition-the degree of compactness of a substance.
Troposphere
Defenition-the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth’s surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere.
Stratosphere
Defenition-the layer of the earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 32 miles (50 km) above the earth’s surface (the lower boundary of the mesosphere).
Mesosphere
Defenition-the region of the earth’s atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, between about 30 and 50 miles (50 and 80 km) in altitude.
Thermosphere
Defenition-the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height.
Thermosphere
Defenition-the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height.
Exosphere
Defenition-the outermost region of a planet’s atmosphere.
Temperature
Defenition-the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.
Nitrogen
Definition-the chemical element of atomic number 7, a colorless, odorless unreactive gas that forms about 78 percent of the earth’s atmosphere. Liquid nitrogen (made by distilling liquid air) boils at 77.4 kelvins (−195.8°C) and is used as a coolant.
Carbon dioxide
Defenition-a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning carbon and organic compounds and by respiration. It is naturally present in air (about 0.03 percent) and is absorbed by plants in photosynthesis.
Oxygen
Defenition-a colorless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.
Altitude
Defenition-the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Density
Defenition-the degree of compactness of a substance.
Air pressure
Defenition-the force exerted by air, whether compressed or unconfined, on any surface in contact with it.
