Observe the injury + stop the game
SALTAPS: ask
Question injured athlete to see how they did it and where it hurts
SALTAPS: look
Look for specific signs of bruising, broken skin, swelling etc
SALTAPS: touch
Gently press site of injury + assess source of pain
SALTAPS: active
Can athlete actively move the injured limb without pain
SALTAPS: passive
If they can move it, try to move the injured limb through full ROM to assess further
SALTAPS: strength
Assess strength of injury by asking athlete to apply pressure by standing or lifting
PRICE
- Protect
- Rest
- Ice
- Compress
- Elevate
PRICE: protect
Protect from further injury (crutches, support off pitch etc)
PRICE: rest
No activity for 2-3 days; use crutches or a sling if needed
PRICE: ice
Ice the injury for 15 mins every 2 hours to reduce swelling
PRICE: compress
Compress area with a bandage to prevent swelling from spreading
PRICE: elevate
Elevate injury above heart to reduce swelling + prevent blood pooling
6 Rs to head injuries
- Recognise
- Remove
- Refer
- Rest
- Recover
- Return
6 Rs: Recognise
Understanding of symptoms of concussion so they can be spotted as soon as an athlete is displaying them
6 Rs: remove
Take player off field of play so not in danger of further injury
6 Rs: refer
Take athlete to trained medical professional so can receive treatment
6 Rs: rest
Athlete shouldn’t return to field of play + have appropriate time off training until they recover
6 Rs: recover
Player should be assessed by medical professionals during rest to determine how well they’re recovering
6 Rs: return
Only when the medical professional is happy that the athlete as fully recovered should they return to training
