7.2 Flashcards
What can personal tools not include?
Specialist tools like crimping tools or anything that needs to be calibrated
What material are majority of tools manufactured from?
Alloy steels
What care must be taken by manufacturers with steel alloy tools?
Manufacturer must provide corrosion resistant finishes and sealed mechanisms as they’re susceptible to corrosion
How is basic cleaning of personal tools done?
With a stiff brush or a rag
How should metal and wooden benches in the workshop be cleaned?
Metal covered: w an oil rag
Wooden: w a stiff brush
What additional maintenance is required when using portable benches Ina workshop?
Ensure all fasteners are tight and the benches are sturdy
What maintenance do vices require?
- wiped w an oily rag frequently
- jaw pulled out so it’s screw bearings and thread can be lubricated
- jaw insert screws and bolts should be tight
- vice handle kept rust free
What has to be done to drilling machines when lubricated?
Clamping screws should be loosened to lubricate the screws
Whose responsibility is it to report any damages or malfunctioning tools?
The user must report it to stores personnel
Where should flammable materials be stored?
In a “flammable storage” facility
What need to be done before mixed two pack sealants are disposed of?
Completely cured
What’s a dimension?
Measurable limit of some kimd
What’s the nominal size of an item?
Approximate dimension used for general indentification
What is the basic size of an item?
Theoretical size from which the size limits are derived by applying allowances and tolerances
What is a clearance fit?
Fit that allows for sliding or rotating between parts
What is an interference fit?
When the dimensions of the two parts overlap
What is an allowance?
Minimum clearance space intended between two parts
What should a calibration label show?
- date of last test
- when next inspection or callibration is due
- authorised persons signature or stamp
Where can calibration be done?
In house in a controlled testing environment or sent to an independent test company
Can inspections and calibrations be done at different time periods to what the manufacturer has said?
Yes if the organisation can show by results that a different time period is appropriate
How are torque wrenches calibrated?
With a torque analyser
Must conform to EC directives and safety standards
How are pressure gauges and transmitters calibrated?
By hydraulic pumps which use either water or oil
By pressure generators that use oil or gas
What can affect calibration processes?
Extreme temperatures
How can micrometers be recalibrated?
- insert precision block between anvil and spindle
- rotate the sleeve w special wrench until it’s longitudinal line aligns w the zero mark on the thimble
What is calibration frequency?
The frequency a tool has to be calibrated at for it to be fit for use
At what angle does a torque analyser apply force to a torque wrench?
90 degrees
