7.11 Flashcards
What will happen if a bearing is overpacked
It will overheat
Hydrodynamic lubrication
The load carrying surfaces of the bearing are separated by a thick film of lubricant.
Hydrostatic lubrication
Air and oil
Air is forced into the bearing area at a high pressure to separate the surfaces.
Boundry layer
Oil film between the mating parts is only a few molecules thick
Viscosity is not important.
Instead , the lubricity is important
Solid film lube
Paint like coating of very fine particles of lube pigments, blended with a binder and other additives.
True brinelling
Caused by excessive impact.
Appears as indentations in bearing cup raceways.
Can lead to vibration and premature bearing failure.
False brinelling
Caused by vibration of the bearing while in a static state.
Lubricant can be forced out.
Metal-metal wear +vibration creates corrosion which looks like true brinelling.
