7. Solutions Flashcards
What are the characteristics of a ‘solution’?
The different substances cannot be seen after mixing - it is uniform in appearance
If a substance can dissolve in water it is known as ______
Soluble
If I dissolve salt in water, what is the solvent and what is the solute?
Salt is the solute and water is the solvent.
Explain the difference between melting and dissolving.
When a substance melts, the same substance changes from a solid to a liquid. When a substance dissolves it does so in water.
How can you recover the solute from a solution.
Evaporate the water and then the solute will crystallise out again.
Explain how filter paper works.
Water can pass through the filter paper, but the solid is trapped.
Explain what happens at a particle level when sugar dissolves in water.
The sugar molecules (particles) move in between the water molecules.
Explain what ‘volume’ is.
The amount of space an object or substance takes up.
Explain what ‘mass’ is.
The amount of matter in a substance.
What is a ‘saturated solution’.
A solution in which no more solute can dissolves (at that temperature)
How can you increase the rate at which a substance dissolves (give three factors)
Increase the temperature of the solution, stir it, or decrease the grain size of the solute.
