1. Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name the process by which plants make their own food (and spell it correctly!)
Photosynthesis
What is chlorophyll?
The chemical substance that makes plants green.
What gas do plants use during the process of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide
In which part of the plant does photosynthesis mainly occur?
Leaves
What role does chlorophyl play in plants (besides making them green)
Chlorophyll absorbs the energy from sunlight.
Name the three things needed for photosynthesis to occur.
Energy (from the sun), Carbon dioxide (from the air) and water (absorbed through the roots)
What gas is produced during photosynthesis?
Oxygen
Why is planting large forests considered a good way to combat global warming?
Trees absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis thus decreasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
What are the two products of photosynthesis?
Glucose sugar and oxygen
How do plants store food?
They convert glucose sugar into starch and store the starch in different parts of the plant.
Describe the test for starch.
If you add yellow/brown iodine solution to starch, it will turn blue/black
What does the work ‘hypothesis’ mean?
A hypothesis is a possible explanation for an observation that can be tested for.
Describe the important role that plants play in keeping the amount gases in the air balanced.
Humans and animals breathe out carbon dioxide - plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and release oxygen. Humans and animals breathe in oxygen etc.
During photosynthesis water is split into oxygen and hydrogen. What are each used for?
Oxygen is released and hydrogen reacts with the carbon dioxide to make glucose.
