16. Telescopes Flashcards
What is an optical telescope?
An instrument that gathers light from distant objects and produces a magnified image.
Why are telescopes often placed on high mountains?
There is less atmosphere to look through thus the images are clearer.
Why are telescopes located away from towns.
There is less light pollution
What is ‘magnification’?
The number of times bigger the image is than the object.
What are radio telescopes?
Instruments that collect radio waves from celestial objects to create images.
What is an array?
A group of radio telescopes working together to collect information on celestial bodies.
What is the Hubble Telescope?
A telescope sent into space to collect images.
Why do space telescopes provide such clear images?
They orbit above the earth’s atmosphere so their view is clearer.
What is SALT?
South African Large Telescope at Sutherland.
What is SKA?
Square Kilometre Array, n array of radio telescopes in the Karoo.
