10. Electric circuits Flashcards
What is the energy source in an electric circuit?
A cell (or a number of cells connected together called a battery)
What is a series of metal pathways printed on a board called?
A circuit board.
Explain what an electric current is.
An electric current is the movement of electric charges through a conductor.
What is a conductor?
A conductor is a material that allows electric current to flow through it.
What is the electric conductor used in most wire?
Copper
Why is the copper wire covered in plastic?
The plastic is an insulator which prevents the electricity from flowing out of the wire.
What energy conversations takes place in a light bulb?
Electrical energy to light energy (and a little heat energy)
What energy takes place in a buzzer?
Electrical energy to sound energy.
What energy transfer takes place in a motor?
Electrical energy to movement (or kinetic) energy.
What is an output device?
A device that converts electrical energy into another form of energy.
Describe the symbol for a cell.
Long line next to a short line
Describe the symbol for a light bulb.
Circle with a X in it
Describe the symbol for a battery.
Long line, short line, long line, short line etc.
Describe the symbol for an open switch.
Small circle with a line at an angle the doesn’t touch a small circle on the other side.
Describe the symbol for a closed switch.
Small circle with straight line to another small circle.
