During the first five year plan their was low productivity which held back economic growth.

- alexei stakhanov was held as an example to workers
- 14 x the output of a normal miner
- 1 month later, 227 tonnes of coal in a single shift

What were the successes of the second five year plan?
A
- output of steel trebled
- transport: the first lines of Moscow metro opened
- improvement in living standard through reforms in agriculture: allowed to farm privately which allowed people to recover from famines.

What were the problems with the second five year plan?
A
- fear of execution/exile –> nobody criticised plan
- consumer goods eg shoe production. In 1934 6000 people waited for more than a day outside the only shoe shop

What did the second five year plan focus on?
A
Heavy industry. New industries (eg chemical processing) and transport.
This is because the threat of war had increased and peasant support would be crucial -> needed better standard of living
