How successful was the production of armaments?
The production of armaments doubled between the years 1941-1944
How did the weather help Russia win the war?
The German army was unable to reach Moscow by first snow, unprepared for harsh conditions.
How did Russian nationalism help win the war?
Russians were ‘fighting for their homeland, not the communists’
Phrases like ‘motherland’ and ‘great patriotic war’ where emphasised. Germany was presented as a foreign enemy, not an ideological one.
How did the church help win the war?
- since 1917 the communists had been hostile to the Russian Orthodox Church.
- when war came, 414 churches were allowed to reopen by 1945.

What was the grand alliance?
Alliance between Britain and USA. They shared a common enemy.
Why was the gran alliance good?
- It divided the attention and lessened the threat to Russian people eg British bombers targeted German cities so the German airforce could not concentrate on Russia.
- land lease: Roosevelt supplied Russia with American resources. This had a minor significance in military (2% of artillery and 10% of tanks) but the red army was dependant on the land lease for food.

Why was the land lease seen as suspicious?
It showed that capitalism was better than communism.

- could not count on support for communism, forced to turn to religion and nationalism.
