Q

What other reason did Stalin have for the break with the NEP?

A

It was a tactile move because the left had no leader (after the defeat of Trotsky) and so by positioning himself on the left he was assured of support.

Q

What was two tactile manoeuvres Stalin employed?

A
  • Stalin knew when to retreat. Feb 1928 he began his campain against Bukharin but encountered resistance and immediately backed down.
  • Stalin was excellent at manipulating the party. He circulated rumours that he was going to form an alliance with Zinoviev and Kamenev. When Bukharin arranged a secret meeting with them, Stalin used it as evidence of Bukharin’s factionalism.
