Hazard
Anything that could cause someone harm.
Risk assessment
A statutory process that considers what might cause harm to people and what reasonable steps might be taken to prevent that harm.
Risk
The likelihood or chance that someone may be harmed as a result of being exposed to the hazard.
Control measure
Any action carried out in advance that protects against a possible danger or injury.
What points do safe working practices include?
- Do not operate machinery unless trained
- PPE must be worn when using machinery
- Guards used on machines
- Damaged machinery to be removed
- Work areas kept.clean and free of hazards
- Walkways kept clear and no trip hazards
- Accidents to be reported and recorded
- To be aware of emergency procedures eg fire evacuation points
About risk assessments
Before manufacture activity can take place the employer must carry out a risk assessment. Records must be kept in establishments with 5 or more employees.
Regularly reviewed by employer.
