2 Performance characteristics Flashcards
Define electrical conductor
Allows flow of electrical current through the material (with little resistance)
Define electrical insulator
Does not allow the flow of electricity through the material
Define thermal conductor
Allows the transfer of heat energy through the material
Define thermal insulator
Does not allow the transfer of heat energy through the material
What are two types of conductivity?
Electrical
Thermal
What are the 5 types of strength?
Bending
Tensile
Compressive
Shear
Torsional
Define bending strength
The ability to resist forces that may bend the material
Define tensile strength
The ability to resist stretching or pulling forces
Define compressive strength
The ability to withstand being crushed or shortened by pushing forces
Define shear strength
The ability to resist sliding forces on a parallel plane
Define torsional strength
The ability to withstand twisting forces from applied torque or tension
Define elasticity
The ability to be deformed and then return to original shape when force is removed
Define plasticity
The ability to be permanently deformed (shaped) and retain this deformed shape
Define malleability
The ability to withstand deformation by compression without cracking
Define ductility
The ability to be drawn out under tension
Define hardness
The ability to resist abrasive wear - scratching
Define toughness
The ability to absorb impact force without fracture
Define durability
The ability to withstand general wear over a period of time
Define biodegradability
The ability to naturally decompose by the actions of material or other living organisms
