5.2 Anthropometrics and Ergonomics Flashcards
Anthropometrics definition
Scientific measurements of the human body applied to the design and construction of products.
Why is anthropometric data used?
It helps designers to take into consideration the wide range of sizes and abilities that exists.
What does measurement data include?
Height, weight, shoe size, arm length and grip strength.
How is the anthropometric data represented?
Graphical representation of data is used as it clearly shows the range of measurements.
What percentile of the anthropometric data is used for designing?
The 5th to 95th percentile.
People in the top and bottom five percent can be difficult to design for since extreme measurements can be encountered.
Ergonomics definition
The study of how people interact with products and their working environment.
Ergonomic factors to consider?
- anthropometric data range of potential users
- full range of abilities of possible users concerning all senses
- movements and forces required when using the product
- shape and form of parts touched by users
- selection of materials
- selection of suitable colour schemes
- use of appropriate symbols
Why are ergonomics considered?
Interaction with products through all senses needs to be considered to avoid discomfort and stress.
