7 - Phenols Flashcards
What properties do phenols have?
They’re solid at room temperature and pressure, and are slightly soluble, but less so than alcohols.
How do you make a Phenol?
Add a hydroxyl group to a benzene ring.
What happens if you put a Phenol in water?
It forms a weak acid solution, as hydrogen ions dissociated off the -OH group.
What is the equation for Phenol + Water?
C6H5OH + aq C6H5O- + H+.
What happens when you add sodium hydroxide to a phenol?
Phenol is neutralised by sodium hydroxide. It forms a salt and water. The salt is sodium phenoxide. C6H5OH + NaOH -> C6H5O-Na+ + H2O.
What is the equation for Phenol + Reactive metal?
2C6H5OH + 2Na -> 2C6H5O-Na+ + H2. This effervesces and produces Hydrogen gas. The organic product, a salt, is sodium phenoxide.
