6 - The Reactivity Of Alkenes And Benzene Flashcards
Why is there a high electron density in an alkene?
The Pi bonds sit above and below the plane of the carbon atoms - producing high electron density.
What does cyclohexane react as?
A typical alkene. For example, it decolourises bromine water.
How is the Br-Br polarised by an electron? What does this result in?
Electrons in the localised Pi bonds repel electrons in the Br2 molecule inducing dipoles into it. The electrons in the bond are repelled, and the molecule is polarised. There are now dipoles in the molecule.
How does the Br-Br break, and what does it form?
It breaks by heterolytic fission, forming a bromide ion (Br-).
What does the Br- ion bond to? What does this form?
It bonds to the carbocation forming a covalent bond.
